Cheekha Dar
December 2024, my cousin and I set out to climb Cheekha Dar — at 3,611 meters, the highest mountain in Iraq, right on the border with Iran. After hours of hiking through deep snow and biting wind, a thick fog rolled in, hiding the ridges ahead. Just below the summit, we made the call to turn back. We didn’t reach the top, but standing there in the white silence of the Zagros Mountains, it still felt like a victory.
